Facts checked · every source is listed at the bottom of the page

Where Bronte is

Bronte is Oakville’s south-west corner on Lake Ontario. A local real estate agent’s guide (not an official source) puts it between Third Line and Burloak Drive, south of Rebecca Street. A real estate team’s guide (also not official) uses Jones Street as the eastern edge instead, so where Bronte ends depends on whom you ask.

Wikipedia dates Bronte to 1834, when it began as a fishing village where Twelve Mile Creek, also called Bronte Creek, flows into the lake. The name honours Horatio Nelson, who held the title Duke of Bronte. A post office followed in 1851 and the first harbour was finished in 1856. In 1962, Bronte, Oakville, Palermo, Sheridan and the rest of Trafalgar Township merged into the present Town of Oakville.

Bronte Village, the commercial strip along Lakeshore Road West, has its own business improvement area, the Bronte BIA, which is a local board of the Town. The Town’s 2018 urban design direction for the village describes it as a designated mixed-use growth area in the Livable Oakville Plan, with Lakeshore Road West as its main street.

Homes and recent sales

Most sales are detached. In TRREB’s report for April to June 2026, 52 of Bronte’s 76 sales were detached houses, with 11 condo apartments, 6 attached or row townhouses, 6 condo townhouses and 1 semi. Condo apartments were a bigger share of new listings than of sales: 51 of the quarter’s 199.

One quirk of the quarter: Bronte’s condo apartments sold for more than its condo townhouses, with a median of about $1,045K against about $881K. TRREB reports this community simply as Bronte, while the cover map of the same report still labels the area Bronte East and Bronte West, so treat the boundary behind these figures as approximate.

Zoning changed in 2026. On June 15, Council adopted By-law 2026-088, which updates the low-density residential zones (RL1 to RL11) south of Dundas Street under the South Oakville zoning by-law (2014-014). If a purchase depends on adding on or rebuilding, confirm the current rules with the Town before you firm up.

Schools

School assignment goes by street address, and both boards are redrawing boundaries in parts of Oakville. Before you rely on any school below, check the exact address with the HDSB’s Find Local School tool and the HCDSB’s Find Your School tool.

On the public side, Eastview Public School (2266 Hixon St) is inside Bronte as the broader of the two guides draws it.

On the Catholic side, St. Dominic Catholic Elementary School is at 2405 Rebecca St, and its 2026–27 boundary map runs from the Burlington boundary east toward Third Line, between the lake and the QEW. It belongs to the St. Thomas Aquinas family of schools; the 2026–27 map for St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School (124 Dorval Dr) covers Oakville south of the QEW.

HDSB secondary boundaries are changing too. In May 2026, trustees approved boundaries for the new Oakville NE #1 High School, which the board anticipates will open in September 2027, and the same decision adjusts the English and French Immersion programs at Garth Webb, T. A. Blakelock and White Oaks secondary schools. It is being phased in over three-plus years.

Harbours, parks and the waterfront

Bronte has two Town harbours. Bronte Outer Harbour (2340 Ontario St) has 400 slips for seasonal and visiting boaters, and the inner Bronte Harbour (2508 Lakeshore Rd W) has about 200 seasonal slips. Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park shares the Ontario Street address: 7.78 hectares below Lakeshore Road, with the Bronte Butterfly Gazebo and 212 parking spaces.

Further west, Shell Park (3307 Lakeshore Rd W) covers 20.61 hectares, with more than 500 roses that bloom from June to September, community garden plots, a leash-free dog park, a skateboard park, a playground and four soccer fields. South Shell Waterfront Park (3450 Lakeshore Rd W) has interpretive signs and naturalized parkland, and the Town says birders have recorded dozens of species there, including some species at risk.

Bronte Pool (2184 Hixon St) is an outdoor pool and Nautical Park (355 Nautical Blvd) has a splash pad. Bronte Beach Park (45 West River St) has the harbour’s public boat launch ramp, and the Town notes that Oakville’s waterfront beaches have no lifeguards on duty. The Bronte Creek Trail starts at the harbour and follows the creek north through Petro Canada Park and along the west side of Bronte Road to the provincial park and Upper Middle Road West. The Town’s Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre for Seniors is at 1565 Old Lakeshore Rd W.

On May 25, 2026, Council endorsed a Bronte Waterfront Strategy, a framework for improvements such as better promenades and pedestrian links and ways to connect the inner and outer harbours with the village. The Town says projects would come in phases, each subject to future Council approval through the capital budget.

For shopping, Lakeshore Road West is the village’s main street of shops and restaurants, and South Oakville Centre, at Rebecca Street and Third Line, began in 1959 as an L-shaped strip mall and has since been enclosed (per Wikipedia).

Getting around

Bronte GO Station (2104 Wyecroft Rd) is on GO’s Lakeshore West line and has free parking in a main lot of 1,824 spaces and a south lot of 1,149.

Oakville Transit Route 14 runs along Lakeshore Road and Rebecca Street, with timed stops at Lakeshore and Bronte, Lakeshore and Great Lakes, and Burloak and Rebecca, between Oakville GO and Appleby GO. Route 15 Bridge ends at South Oakville Centre with a stop at Rebecca and Bronte, and Route 3 Third Line starts at South Oakville Centre and runs north by way of Bronte GO.

Questions about Bronte

Where does Bronte start and end?

There is no official line. Local real estate guides agree on Burloak Drive to the west, Rebecca Street to the north and the lake to the south, but differ on the east: one uses Third Line and another Jones Street. TRREB reports Bronte as one of its Oakville communities.

How old is Bronte?

Wikipedia dates it to 1834, when it began as a fishing village at the mouth of Twelve Mile Creek (also called Bronte Creek). It had a post office from 1851 and its first harbour in 1856, and it became part of the present Town of Oakville in a 1962 merger.

What kind of homes sell in Bronte?

Mostly detached houses. In TRREB’s report for April to June 2026, 52 of Bronte’s 76 sales were detached, 11 were condo apartments, 6 were attached or row townhouses, 6 were condo townhouses and 1 was a semi. The detached median was about $1,635K.

What is the Bronte Waterfront Strategy?

A framework Council endorsed on May 25, 2026 to guide long-term improvements to the Bronte waterfront, such as promenades, pedestrian connections and links between the inner and outer harbours and the village. The Town says projects would be phased and each needs future Council approval through the capital budget.

Buying or selling in Bronte?

A neighbourhood guide can’t price a specific house. If you own here, I will walk your home and put my reasoning in writing, free and with no obligation to list. If you are buying, I will pull the recent sales on the street you are looking at.
