Port Credit, Mississauga: Neighbourhood Guide

Where Port Credit is

Port Credit sits at the mouth of the Credit River on the north shore of Lake Ontario, and Wikipedia gives its main intersection as Hurontario Street and Lakeshore Road. Credit Valley Conservation says the Credit rises in Orangeville, Erin and Mono and drains into Lake Ontario at Port Credit.

Heritage Mississauga (not an official source) explains that when the Crown bought land for settlers, the Mississauga Nation kept a mile on each side of the river, so a village grew up at Port Credit later than elsewhere. Once it did, its harbour made it a major shipping point for the area, sending out lumber and grain, with stonehookers lifting shale in the late 19th century, and commercial fishing.

Wikipedia’s history of the area (not an official source) records that Port Credit became a police village in 1909 and a town in 1961, and was amalgamated into Mississauga in 1974. The St. Lawrence Starch works operated there from 1889 to 1989.

The heritage district

West of the river, Old Port Credit Village is a heritage conservation district. The 2004 designating by-law (No. 0272-2004) described it as the area bounded by Lakeshore Road West, Mississauga Road South, Lake Ontario and the Credit River, and the original district plan came into force in July 2004. An updated plan prepared for the City in 2019 refines the boundary to take in the entire Credit River, so ask the City which version applies to a given property.

On its east, south and west sides, the district generally follows the government’s planned village plot of 1835, and its street grid was laid out by surveyor Robert Lynn. Peter and John streets are named after the Mississauga leaders Peter and John Jones, directors of the Credit Harbour Company, and Mississauga Road South was first called Joseph Street, after Chief Joseph Sawyer.

Its landmarks include the Mississauga Masonic Temple of 1926, which incorporates Port Credit’s first church (1849), Clarke Memorial Hall of 1922, which served as the Port Credit council chambers from 1941 to 1974, and a fire hall and police station opened in 1955 that the plan calls the oldest surviving fire hall in Mississauga. If a home you are considering is inside the district, City staff use the district plan’s policies when reviewing development applications and heritage permits there.

Homes and recent sales

Condos made up most of Port Credit’s sales in the quarter. In TRREB’s report for April to June 2026, 17 of its 36 sales were condo apartments and 5 were condo townhouses, against 7 detached houses, 6 semis and 1 freehold townhouse.

With counts that small, single sales move the numbers. This quarter the six semis averaged about $1,744K, above the seven detached houses at about $1,625K, and condo apartments averaged 68 days on the market. Look at the individual sales behind any figure before leaning on it.

Schools

School assignment goes by street address. Before you rely on any school below, check the exact address with the Peel District School Board’s School Finder and with the Peel Region “Which School do I Attend?” tool, which the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board links for families and which covers both boards.

Port Credit Secondary School (70 Mineola Road East) was founded in 1919, and its board profile calls it the first secondary school in Peel. The profile lists regional SciTech and Strings programs and Specialist High Skills Majors in justice, community safety and emergency services and in manufacturing. Forest Avenue Public School (20 Forest Avenue), which its principal describes as a school of about 200 students in Port Credit, teaches Kindergarten to Grade 6. Both are in the PDSB’s Port Credit family of schools.

On the Catholic side, St. James Catholic Global Learning Centre (98 Wanita Road) describes itself as a regional Kindergarten to Grade 8 school in the Port Credit area and an authorized International Baccalaureate World School. Because it is a regional site, it takes applications through the school rather than the board’s central online system.

Waterfront, parks and the village

J.C. Saddington Park (53 Lake Street), on the lakefront where the old village’s quiet streets end, was built on a former landfill site and has a looped path, picnic areas, a playground, heritage buildings and an informal amphitheatre. The heritage district plan singles it out as a good example of 1970s park planning in Canada.

Port Credit Memorial Park (40 Stavebank Road) is a popular spot for festivals and events, with a large pavilion, plaza, open lawn, picnic areas, a skate park and a playground. It shares parking with Port Credit Memorial Arena, which the City calls its first and oldest surviving public arena, and with Port Credit Library (20 Lakeshore Road East). There has been a library in the Port Credit area since 1896.

A red and white working lighthouse, built in 1991 to replace the original that was destroyed by fire in 1936, looks out over the Credit River and the harbour (Visit Mississauga). The City’s Credit Village Marina rents boat slips by the hour, day or week.

The local business association, the Port Credit BIA, describes the area as an urban village on the edge of Mississauga’s waterfront, and its directory runs from food and drink to fishing and marine services.

Getting around

Port Credit GO Station (30 Queen Street East) is on GO’s Lakeshore West line. GO lists free parking, including a 350-space north lot, plus reserved and carpool parking and bike racks.

MiWay Route 2 Hurontario runs every day between Port Credit GO and the City Centre Transit Terminal at Square One. Route 23 Lakeshore runs along Lakeshore Road every day between Long Branch GO and Clarkson GO, and Route 14 Lorne Park runs between Port Credit GO and Clarkson GO on weekdays.

Metrolinx is building the Hazel McCallion Line, a light rail line with 19 stops that runs from Port Credit GO to Brampton Gateway Terminal along Hurontario Street. Its project page gives no opening date, so this guide doesn’t either.
