Where Old Milton is
The Town uses the name Old Milton in its planning studies without defining a boundary for it. Neighbourhood guides describe a long strip along Main Street, running roughly from Bronte Street to Thompson Road. Downtown sits at its centre: the Downtown Milton BIA, founded in 1977, covers roughly Bell Street to Fulton Street and Mill Street to Mary Street, and has more than 220 members.
The town grew from a 100-acre Crown grant to Jasper Martin in 1820. He dammed Sixteen Mile Creek to power a grist mill around 1820 to 1822, which created Mill Pond, and Milton was incorporated as a town in 1857. The limestone former Halton County Court House, built in 1855 to a design by Clarke and Murray, served as courthouse and jail until 1977 and became Milton’s Town Hall in 1985.
In the Town’s Official Plan, the historic downtown and the area around Milton GO together make up the Central Business District, and new development in the historic downtown has to be sensitive to, and compatible with, the character that is already there.
Homes and recent sales
Most of what sells here is detached: 23 of the 36 sales in TRREB’s report for April to June 2026, with the rest made up of 7 condo apartments, 3 semis, 2 condo townhouses and 1 row townhouse. HoodQ, a third-party data service, estimates that about 30% of homes here were built in 1960 or earlier and about 35% between 1961 and 1980; treat that as an estimate, not a Town figure.
Heritage status is common. The Town’s Municipal Heritage Register, updated July 2026, lists 77 properties on Main Street East, 39 on Martin Street and 35 on Mill Street; 11 of those are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act and the rest are listed. If a house you are looking at is on the register, ask the Town what that means for any work you have in mind.
Zoning matters too. On October 19, 2020, Council enacted Official Plan Amendment 60, and Zoning By-law 081-2020 set new standards for low-density homes in the Downtown Character Area. By-law 077-2021 brought new standards to the residential part of Old Milton outside the downtown and west of Ontario Street. The Official Plan also doesn’t allow development in the regulatory flood plain within the Central Business District without the conservation authority’s approval. If you plan to add on or rebuild, check those rules before you firm up.

Schools
School assignment goes by street address, and both boards have redrawn boundaries in parts of Milton recently. Before you rely on any school below, check the exact address with the HDSB’s Find Local School tool and the HCDSB’s Find Your School tool.
Martin Street Public School (184 Martin St) is a K–8 dual-track school with French Immersion. It was rebuilt in 2017 as an 80,000 sq ft, two-storey building that keeps the facade of the original century-old schoolhouse. J.M. Denyes Public School is at 215 Thomas St, and Milton District High School, at 396 Williams Ave, has been teaching students since 1960.
Holy Rosary Catholic Elementary School is at 141 Martin St. Its family of schools feeds Bishop P. F. Reding Catholic Secondary School at 1120 Main St E.
Mill Pond, parks and things to do
The Official Plan calls Mill Pond a key focal point of downtown and designates the pond and the park around it as a community park area. The redesigned pond officially opened in June 1967, the gazebo went up in 2001, and the Jaycee Trail around it takes in Miller’s Walk, the Livingston Park Trail and a trestle bridge.
Victoria Park (150 Mary St, the same address the Town uses for Town Hall) has a playground and a shelter. Between Victoria Day and Thanksgiving, the Town books the Town Hall courtyard, Victoria Park and its gazebo, and Mill Pond for small ceremonies and photos of up to 25 people.
On Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon, the Milton Farmers’ Market, run by the Milton Chamber of Commerce, closes Main Street between James Street and Martin Street, with 40-plus vendors and more than 2,500 visitors a week; the 2026 season opened May 16. The Downtown Milton BIA runs events through the year, including SummerFest on Main Street in June, a car show in September, Light Up the Winter Nights in November and Miracle on Main Street in December. The Milton Fall Fair is held at the fairgrounds at 136 Robert St; the 2027 fair is set for September 24 to 26.
East along Main Street East are the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton and the Milton Public Library’s main branch, both at 1010 Main St E, and the Milton Leisure Centre at 1100 Main St E, with pools, a gym and fitness space.
Getting around
Milton GO Station is at 780 Main St E, east along Main Street, with GO’s Milton line running to Union Station. It has 1,468 free spaces in the main lot, plus carpool and reserved parking, bike racks and Milton Transit connections. GO Transit says the west end of the platform is closed for repairs and safety upgrades, with completion expected by late December 2026, so not every train door opens at Milton for now.
The Town is planning the area within a 10-minute walk of the station as Uptown, meant to complement the natural and historic character of downtown. Its 2020 Mobility Hub Study found the area may eventually hold 25,114 residents in 15,040 units, and 4,137 jobs.
By car, Regional Road 25 runs through town as Main Street, Martin Street, Ontario Street and Steeles Avenue, and both Regional Road 25 and James Snow Parkway have Highway 401 interchanges. To the south, Regional Road 25, as Bronte Road, meets Highway 407 at Exit 13.
Questions about Old Milton
Where exactly is Old Milton?
The Town uses the name in its planning studies without defining a boundary, and neighbourhood guides describe a strip along Main Street running roughly from Bronte Street to Thompson Road, with the downtown business area, roughly Bell Street to Fulton Street and Mill Street to Mary Street, at its centre.
Are Old Milton houses heritage-designated?
Some are. The Town’s Municipal Heritage Register (July 2026) lists 77 properties on Main Street East, 39 on Martin Street and 35 on Mill Street; 11 of those are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act and the rest are listed. Ask the Town what a property’s status means before you plan any work on it.
Can I build an addition on an Old Milton house?
Possibly, but check first. The Town set new zoning standards for low-density homes in the Downtown Character Area in 2020 (By-law 081-2020) and for the residential part of Old Milton outside the downtown and west of Ontario Street in 2021 (By-law 077-2021). Heritage status and flood-plain rules can also apply. Confirm with the Town’s planning staff before you firm up an offer that depends on it.
