Property tax
How is property tax worked out on a Milton home?
The Town of Milton says property taxes are based on a property’s assessed value and the current municipal and education tax rates. Its residential rate combines four parts: the Town’s general municipal rate, Halton Region’s rate, the education rate and an enhanced waste service rate. The Town’s property tax calculator estimates a yearly bill from an assessed value.
Where can I see Milton’s current tax rates?
On the Town of Milton’s tax calculator and rates page, which lists the current rate for each property type, the four parts of the residential rate and past years’ rates. The Town says the current year’s taxes are typically available on or around June 1.
Water, garbage and recycling
Who bills water and wastewater in Milton?
Halton Region provides water and wastewater service, and Milton Hydro bills it on the Region’s behalf. Residential meters are read and billed every two months. A bill is a monthly service charge plus water and wastewater usage charges, at rates the Region publishes; the current rates took effect January 1, 2026.
How do garbage, Green Cart and recycling work in Milton?
Halton Region collects the Green Cart every week and garbage every other week: up to 3 bags or cans, or up to 6 with 3 bought garbage tags. Put items out by 7 a.m. on collection day and no earlier than 5 p.m. the night before. Since January 1, 2026, Blue Box recycling has been run by Circular Materials Ontario instead of the Region. Halton’s online schedule shows each address’s collection day.
Schools
How do I find which schools serve a Milton address?
School assignment goes by street address, and boundaries change. For English-language schools, check the address with the Halton District School Board’s Find Local School tool for public schools and the Halton Catholic District School Board’s Find Your School tool for Catholic schools. Confirm with the board before you rely on a school when you buy.
Are there French-language schools in Milton?
Yes. Conseil scolaire Viamonde, the public French-language board, runs École élémentaire Dyane-Adam at 500 Cedar Hedge Rd for Kindergarten to Grade 6. Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir, the Catholic French-language board, lists École élémentaire catholique Saint-Nicolas and École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Anne in Milton. The French-language boards set their own admission criteria, so check with the board.
Getting around
How does the GO train work from Milton?
Milton GO, at 780 Main St. E., is on GO’s Milton line. Metrolinx describes the line as weekday rush-hour service between Milton and Toronto, running east in the morning and west in the afternoon. GO’s Milton schedule also includes GO bus route 21. Check the current schedule, which took effect October 26, 2026, before you plan a commute around it.
Is there parking at Milton GO?
Yes. GO Transit lists 1,468 free spaces in Milton GO’s main lot, plus reserved and carpool parking. Spaces and rules can change, so check GO’s station page before you count on a spot.
Is all-day, two-way GO service coming to the Milton line?
Metrolinx has a Milton line expansion page, but it gives no timeline for two-way, all-day service. It describes the line today as weekday rush-hour service between Milton and Toronto. Until Metrolinx publishes a date, it isn’t something to count on when you buy.
Buying in Milton
Is HST charged on a resale home in Milton?
No. Ontario’s land transfer tax guide says HST applies to newly built or substantially renovated homes but not to resale homes. On a new home, the price you are quoted may already account for HST rebates, and those rebates have their own conditions, so ask your lawyer how a builder’s price treats them.
Do buyers who aren’t Canadian citizens or permanent residents pay an extra tax?
Yes. Ontario’s Non-Resident Speculation Tax is 25%, charged in addition to land transfer tax, on the purchase of residential property anywhere in the province by individuals who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and by foreign corporations and taxable trustees. Talk to your lawyer about whether it applies to you.
Growth
What is the Boyne Survey?
It is the Town of Milton’s plan for about 930 hectares of south Milton between Louis St. Laurent Avenue, James Snow Parkway, Britannia Road and Tremaine Road, prepared to house about 50,000 residents once built. Council adopted it in 2010, Halton Region approved it in 2013 and the Ontario Municipal Board in January 2015. Its neighbourhoods include Ford, Cobban, Walker and Bowes, and its target housing mix is 48% low density, 35% medium and 17% high.
